Over 230 families attended Cheam’s Nonsuch Park on Sunday 10th June to enjoy a fun-filled day of races, stalls, competitions and music at the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic organised by Sutton and Epsom NCT. This year’s event had a royal theme, in order to conclude a week of celebrations to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.
The picnic, sponsored by Stagecoach Sutton and Sutton High School, raised over £1500 for the charity, which helps parents and parents-to-be through a range of services.
Attendees enjoyed a special performance from Stagecoach Sutton; a gymnastics display from members of the Tumbling All Stars; storytelling with Sutton Library; Songs and games with Gymboree; a mass rendition of ‘Heads, shoulders knees and toes’ and support from Radio St Helier. The crowds also enjoyed a variety of stalls including the lucky dip, teddy tombola, face painting and hook a duck, and there were special visits from local fire and police units along with their vehicles.
To coincide with the Jubilee, there were special competitions to find the best jubilee-dressed teddy and child, as well as the annual races for children and their parents.
Maria Booker, chair of NCT Sutton, Epsom and District branch, said:
“We are thrilled by the overwhelming success of this year’s Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Our volunteers did us proud to organise a brilliant event and despite the weather forecast, the skies were mainly clear and the crowds turned out in their numbers to enjoy the fun and games and raise a fantastic amount of money to help parents and families in our area.”
