Sutton Mum, Petrina Banfield, is inviting all Local Mums along to Dotty's vintage teahouse in Carshalton this summer to celebrate the publication of her first book, Letters from Alice.
Local Mum and author, Petrina Banfield, is celebrating the publication of her first book, 'Letters from Alice’, which tells the amazing true story of a 1920s almoner (the forerunner to our modern social workers), pieced together from a collection of letters and case files unearthed at the London Metropolitan Archives
Petrina is inviting all Local Mums along to Dotty's vintage teahouse, 108 High Street, Carshalton, on 10th August (9.30am - 4pm) to celebrate publication of her fascinating book, copies of which will be available on the day.
Alice’s story
Petrina's father was taken into care as a baby and then separated from his identical twin at the age of five. While trying to piece together the scattered fragments of his childhood puzzle, Petrina stumbled upon some letters from a London almoner called Alice.
Petrina says, ‘I was so captivated by the heart stopping drama of the true-life stories in the reports, letters and case files, that I just had to find out more.’
The result is 'Letters from Alice', a gripping and deeply moving tale, enriched with lively social history and excerpts from newspaper articles, which brings the colourful world of 1920s London to life.
Petrina is an ex-Surrey Police employee, an adoptive parent and foster carer and she can't wait to see the book on the shelves.
'A brilliantly clever look at the almoners, the pre-cursers to the NHS’s social workers, this story is expertly crafted, blending extensive historic fact with a beautiful, deeply moving story based on real life events. You won't want to put it down.’
