The RSC’s take on JM Barrie’s classic bittersweet tale of innocence and loss is a non-stop visual masterpiece with an hilarious yet poignant script and outstanding performances
Wendy & Peter Pan has it all, outstanding acting from top-flight RSC actors, an uproariously funny yet touching and emotional script from Ella Hickson, a delightful yet darkly witty interpretation of JM Barrie’s classic story and truly amazing visuals set in the impressive and super-comfortable Barbican theatre. This production is the perfect winter treat for all the family.
From the get-go the show confidently sets the tone as a cut above and knows it is no ordinary panto. As we open on the scene of the Darlings’ nursery the stunningly beautiful set with incredible detail is matched by the exquisite acting, high drama and special effects of Peter Pan, the swashbuckling pirates and the lost boys. The characters dance and fly around the theatre on invisible threads like magic moonbeams taking us with them on their exhilarating journey to Neverland.
With knock-out performances from all the lead characters, especially Toby Stephens' Captain Hook, Wendy and Peter, this production doesn’t lose pace or falter for the whole two and half hours, which is amazing in itself. The show successfully manages to be joyful, tender, very funny and spectacular, delighting both adults and children, yet never becomes superficial. All while dealing seriously and tenderly with the universal themes of grief, motherhood and loss of childhood.
You cannot fail to be impressed and moved by this touching and spectacular take on the beloved Peter Pan story which wows with visual effects yet still manages to pull on all the heart-strings.
